Theming

histuid uses GTK4 CSS for styling notification popups. You can customize colors, fonts, borders, shadows, and more.

Theme Packs​

Themes are self-contained packs with styling, layout, and optional audio:

~/.config/histui/themes/mytheme/

Create a theme and reference it in your config:

Theme Resolution Order​

histuid checks for themes in this order:

  1. User themes directory: ~/.config/histui/themes/
  2. Bundled themes: Embedded in the binary

This allows you to override bundled themes by placing a directory with the same name in your themes directory.

Partial Themes​

You don't need to create a complete theme from scratch. Partial themes inherit from existing themes:

Missing components are automatically inherited:

  • Layout: Uses default's layout.xml if none provided
  • Manifest: Merged with default (sounds, icons)
Single-file themes

For simple CSS-only themes, you can also use a single file: ~/.config/histui/themes/my-colors.css

histuid ships with these bundled themes:

Glass theme requirements

The glass theme requires compositor blur support for the full frosted glass effect. For Hyprland 0.53+, add these layer rules to your config:

layerrule = blur_popups on, match:namespace histui-notification

For Hyprland < 0.53 (legacy syntax):

For Sway, blur is not natively supported - consider the swayfx fork.

Light/Dark Mode​

histuid supports automatic light/dark mode switching based on system preference:

The .light or .dark class is applied to .notification-popup based on the color scheme.

Hot Reload​

Theme changes are automatically reloaded when theme files are modified. You can edit your theme in real-time without restarting the daemon.
